What to Expect at Your Annual Physical

Why annual physicals matter
An annual physical is a chance to step back from day-to-day symptoms and take a broader look at your health. Even when you feel fine, a yearly visit gives your doctor a baseline to compare against over time, which makes it much easier to spot small changes before they become bigger problems.
Think of it as preventive maintenance. Blood pressure, weight, cholesterol, and blood sugar can all drift gradually without any noticeable symptoms. Catching those trends early often means simpler solutions, like adjusting habits, rather than more involved treatment later.
Before you arrive
It helps to jot down any symptoms, concerns, or questions you've been meaning to bring up, even minor ones. Bring a current list of medications and supplements you take, along with your insurance card and photo ID.
If you're due for bloodwork, your doctor's office may ask you to fast beforehand. When in doubt, call ahead and ask so you're not caught off guard.
During the visit
Most physicals start with a review of your medical history and any updates since your last visit — new medications, family history changes, or lifestyle shifts like a new job or move. Vital signs come next: blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, weight, and sometimes height.
Your doctor will typically listen to your heart and lungs, check your abdomen, look at your skin, and examine other areas relevant to your age and health history. Depending on your age and risk factors, this might include a discussion about age-appropriate cancer screenings, vaccines, or bloodwork.
This is also the time to speak up. If something has been bothering you, even something that seems small, mention it. Physicals are a natural moment to address several things at once.
After your visit
If labs were ordered, results usually come back within a few days to a couple of weeks. Your doctor's office will typically reach out with results and next steps, whether that's a follow-up appointment, a referral, or simply confirmation that everything looks good.
Annual physicals work best when they're actually annual. Keeping a consistent yearly rhythm makes each visit more useful, since your doctor has more data points to compare against.
